Essaouira City
The Moroccan city of Essaouira is a city overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and perhaps what distinguishes it most is that it has a long history, in addition to containing buildings with a distinct and unique architectural character. It is noteworthy that this city has recently witnessed a significant development in the field of tourism, which qualifies it to be one of the Moroccan tourist cities.
Essaouira’s landmarks:
• The Mellah: Also known as the Jewish Quarter, the Mellah of Essaouira, or the Mellah of Sultan’s Traders. Its construction dates back to the era of the Saadi Sultan Ahmed Al-Mansur Al-Dhahabi, at the end of the 16th century AD, when the Sultan brought an elite group of Jewish merchants to the city with the aim of revitalizing the commercial port. Later, specifically during the 17th century AD, the Alawite Sultan Muhammad bin Abdullah (Muhammad III) rebuilt Essaouira in the modern style with its wide streets, unlike the ancient cities of Morocco, and built a new port and a naval military base.
• Mogador Island: A small island located near the city, considered one of the most important Phoenician sites in the western Mediterranean. Archaeological excavations conducted on the island have proven that it contains archaeological remains represented by pottery vessels and fossils, the oldest of which dates back to the second half of the seventh century BC. This island was also famous for containing factories for extracting purple dye.
• Moulay Hassan Square: The most famous square in the city, thanks to its attractive location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and its proximity to both the port and the beach, making it one of the most lively and active places in the city.
Essaouira’s economy depends on:
• Tourism: Considered the first sector in the city, especially during the peak summer period, including both internal and external tourism. The city has a wide reputation for its moderate climate and peaceful vibes.
• Sea fishing: One of the most ancient and oldest economic activities in the city, helped by the abundance of fish wealth. This city is famous for sardines, mackerel, prawns, and fresh Atlantic seafood.
