Detailed Itinerary
Step-by-step timeline of your private journey.
Marrakech → High Atlas & Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m / 7,415 ft)
Morning (08:00 – 11:45): Your driver collects you from your Marrakech hotel or riad at 08:00. Leave the Haouz plains and climb Route N9 into the High Atlas Mountains, pausing at terraced Berber villages and the 2,260 m (7,415 ft) summit of Tizi n'Tichka, the highest major paved pass in North Africa.
UNESCO Ksar Aït Ben Haddou & Ounila Valley Terrace Lunch
Midday (11:45 – 14:45): Turn onto the quiet Ounila Valley side road to Ksar Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen citadel of the old trans-Saharan caravans and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Cross the shallow riverbed on foot and spend two unhurried hours climbing the rammed-earth lanes to the hilltop granary, followed by lunch on a terrace facing the ksar.
Ouarzazate, Skoura & Valley of Roses → Dades Valley Kasbah Stay
Afternoon & Evening (14:45 – 18:00): Drive past Ouarzazate, then continue east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Skoura palm oasis and Kelaat M'gouna's Valley of Roses. Wind into the Dades Gorge past the 'Monkey Fingers' rock formations.
Where You Will Stay (Night 1): Boutique kasbah hotel in the Dades Valley with private en-suite bathroom, three-course Moroccan dinner, and breakfast included (Day 1 total: 310 km / 193 miles, ~5.5–6 hours driving).
Tisdrine Hairpins → Todra Gorge 300 m (984 ft) Canyon Walk
Morning (08:30 – 11:30): After breakfast overlooking the Dades canyon, photograph the carved Tisdrine switchbacks before driving east to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge. Walk the flat, spring-fed riverbed for 45 minutes where vertical rust-red limestone cliffs rise 300 m (984 ft) overhead.
Erfoud Fossil Workshops & Rissani Caravan Souk
Midday (11:30 – 15:30): Cross the pre-Saharan plateau through Tinjdad and Erfoud, renowned for 350-million-year-old marine ammonite and trilobite fossils. Continue to Rissani, ancestral cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, to walk the shaded market alleys and taste freshly baked Madfouna (Berber stuffed flatbread) for lunch.
Erg Chebbi Sunset Camel Trek & En-Suite Luxury Desert Camp
Afternoon & Evening (16:00 – Night): Arrive at Merzouga where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to 150 m (492 ft) across a 28 km (17 mile) sand sea. Ride your camel for 60 to 90 minutes across the dune crests as the light turns from gold to amber and violet (or take a private 4x4 transfer directly to camp).
Where You Will Stay (Night 2): Private en-suite luxury tent in Erg Chebbi with king or twin beds, hot-water shower, private flush toilet, multi-course Moroccan dinner, and Amazigh drumming around the campfire under the Milky Way (Day 2 total: 250 km / 155 miles, ~4–4.5 hours driving).
Sahara Sunrise & 4x4 Loop: Nomads, M'fis Mines, Khamlia & Dayet Srji
Morning (06:00 – 12:30): Wake before dawn to watch the sun crest the high dune toward the Algerian border ridge, then return to camp for a hot shower and full Moroccan breakfast. Set off in your private 4x4 on an off-road loop around Erg Chebbi: share mint tea with a Berber nomadic family in their hand-woven tent, visit the historic M'fis kohl and mineral mines, hear live spiritual Gnawa music in Khamlia village, and stop at Dayet Srji, the seasonal salt lake that draws flamingos after wet winters.
Free Dune Afternoon → Second Night in the Merzouga Region
Afternoon & Evening (13:00 – Night): The afternoon is yours at the foot of the dunes. Rest by a pool with the Erg Chebbi ridge in view, walk the village edge at golden hour, or add optional quad biking or a dune buggy session on request.
Where You Will Stay (Night 3): Dune-edge kasbah hotel in Merzouga village with private en-suite room, dinner, and breakfast included, or a second night inside the Erg Chebbi luxury camp on request (Day 3 total: ~60 km / 37 miles off-road, ~2.5–3 hours driving).
Rissani → Alnif → N'Kob (45 Kasbahs) & Draa Valley → Ouarzazate Stay
Full Day (08:30 – 18:00): Depart Merzouga along the scenic Southern Loop on Route N12 beneath the volcanic ridges of Jbel Saghro. Stop for lunch in N'Kob, the oasis village of 45 mudbrick kasbahs, then follow the 200 km (124 mile) Draa Valley date-palm oasis past Agdz and Tamnougalt.
Where You Will Stay (Night 4): Boutique riad or kasbah hotel in Ouarzazate with private en-suite room, dinner, and breakfast included (Day 4 total: 370 km / 230 miles, ~6–6.5 hours driving).
Ouarzazate: Taourirt Kasbah, Atlas Film Studios & Fint Oasis
Morning (08:30 – 11:30): Because you slept in Ouarzazate, tour the 19th-century Glaoui palace of Taourirt Kasbah and walk the monumental backlot sets at Atlas Film Studios fresh, then pause at the Fint Oasis viewpoint where a green ribbon of palms hides in a canyon just south of town.
Telouet Kasbah on the Old Caravan Road → Marrakech Drop-Off
Afternoon (11:30 – 18:00): Leave the main N9 and follow the Ounila Valley road to Telouet Kasbah, the crumbling Glaoui stronghold that once controlled the salt and caravan trade over the Atlas. Inside the unrestored walls, one wing still holds painted cedar ceilings, zellige tiles and carved stucco. Rejoin the Tizi n'Tichka pass in warm afternoon light and descend to Marrakech, with door-to-door drop-off between 17:00 and 18:00 (Day 5 total: 220 km / 137 miles, ~4.5–5 hours driving). Continuing north? We can end the tour in Fes on request.
Pickup & Meeting Point

Tour FAQs
Why choose the 5-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour over the 3-day or 4-day?
The 5-day itinerary is the only version that gives you two consecutive nights in the Merzouga region (a full Day 3 for the 4x4 nomad, M'fis mines, Khamlia and Dayet Srji loop plus a free dune afternoon) and returns to Marrakech via Telouet Kasbah on the old Glaoui caravan road through the Ounila Valley, a route shorter tours never drive. No day exceeds about 6.5 hours behind the wheel.
How many hours do we drive each day on the 5-day itinerary?
Driving is spread at roughly 5.5–6 hours on Day 1 (310 km / 193 miles to Dades Valley), 4–4.5 hours on Day 2 (250 km / 155 miles to Merzouga), 2.5–3 hours on the Day 3 off-road loop (60 km / 37 miles), 6–6.5 hours on Day 4 (370 km / 230 miles via N'Kob and the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate), and 4.5–5 hours on Day 5 (220 km / 137 miles via Telouet to Marrakech).
What is Telouet Kasbah, and why is it only on the 5-day tour?
Telouet Kasbah is the ruined mountain palace of the Glaoui family, who controlled the trans-Saharan caravan routes over the High Atlas in the 19th and early 20th centuries. One restored wing still shows painted cedar ceilings, zellige tilework and carved stucco. Reaching it means detouring along the Ounila Valley road, which adds about 90 minutes, so it only fits comfortably on a 5-day schedule.
Do the luxury desert camp tents in Erg Chebbi have private bathrooms and hot showers?
Yes. Every private suite tent in our Erg Chebbi luxury desert camp includes an en-suite bathroom with a hot-water shower, a porcelain flush toilet, a washbasin, fresh towels, 220V/USB charging outlets, and king or twin beds with extra winter blankets.
Can this 5-day tour finish in Fes instead of returning to Marrakech?
Yes, on request and at no extra routing fee. If you are continuing north, we route Day 5 from Merzouga up through the Ziz Valley palm canyon, Midelt and the Azrou cedar forest (470 km / 292 miles) and drop you at your Fes riad or hotel instead of returning to Marrakech via Telouet.
What is the best time of year for a Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most comfortable balance: 24–33 °C (75–91 °F) days and mild nights in the dunes. Winter brings crisp blue skies and snow-dusted Atlas peaks but 2–8 °C (36–46 °F) desert dawns, while summer reaches 38–44 °C (100–111 °F) and suits travellers who prefer air-conditioned driving with late-afternoon camel treks.
Is the 5-day tour suitable for families with children and older travellers?
Yes. Families and seniors often choose the 5-day pace because the longest day is about 6.5 hours, afternoons end before dusk, the Day 3 dune afternoon has no fixed schedule, and anyone skipping the camel ride can use our complimentary private 4x4 transfer directly into the luxury camp.
How does private quote-on-request pricing work for the 5-day tour?
Your private rate depends on party size (1 to 15 guests), travel season, and your accommodation choices across all 4 nights, including whether Night 3 is a kasbah hotel or a second luxury camp night. Send your dates and headcount on WhatsApp (+212 661 666 324) or via the booking form for a fixed, all-inclusive quote in EUR, USD, GBP, or MAD.
