Experience Overview

Detailed Itinerary

Step-by-step timeline of your private journey.

09:00 AM

Marrakech → the Haouz Plains

Your driver collects you at your hotel or the nearest medina access point. The city peels away into the flat Haouz Plains: olive groves, orange orchards and the snowline of the High Atlas growing on the horizon. No waiting for a convoy or other passengers, the day starts when you're ready.

~09:45 AM

Women's Argan Oil Cooperative

A guided stop at a village cooperative where local women crack and press argan nuts by hand, the same stone-grinding technique used for centuries. Taste amlou and fresh bread with argan oil, watch cosmetic oil being made, and browse the small shop with zero pressure to buy.

~10:15 AM

Into the Valley: Gorges, Groves & Berber Villages

The road narrows into the Ourika gorge: red canyon walls, walnut and cherry groves along the stream, and stacked adobe villages clinging to the slopes. Your driver stops for the best viewpoints. On Mondays we pause at Tnin Ourika, the weekly Berber souk where farmers trade livestock, spices, rugs and household goods.

~10:45 AM

Mint Tea in a Berber Family Home

A genuine welcome, not a staged stop: mint tea and homemade bread inside a traditional Berber house, with terraces, walnut trees and the family's stories of mountain life. Because this trip is private, we never cut it short. Take the time it deserves.

~11:30 AM

Setti Fatma: Village of the Seven Falls

The road ends at Setti Fatma, a riverside village at about 1,500 m. Choose your afternoon: hire a local guide for the waterfall hike (rocky paths, stream crossings and short scrambles, about 45–60 minutes up to the first falls, more if you continue to the higher cascades), cross the wobbly plank footbridge, or settle straight into a riverside café. Barbary macaques sometimes pose for photos at the trailhead.

~01:30 PM

Riverside Tagine Lunch

Lunch at low tables and cushions set right above the stream: steaming tagines, brochettes and mint tea with your feet practically in the water. Menus come in several languages; bring cash. Not included, so you pick the spot and pace, or ask us to reserve ahead.

~03:00 PM

Free Time: Pools, Stalls or One More Café

Swim in the natural rock pools in summer, browse the village stalls for rugs and pottery, or simply watch the water. This is where a private trip pays off: leave when you're done, not when a bus schedule says so.

~04:00 PM

Golden-Hour Return to Marrakech

The drive home in late-afternoon light, when the valley walls turn amber and the villages glow. Back at your Marrakech accommodation around 17:00, with the evening still free for Jemaa el-Fna.

Pickup & Meeting Point

Important Information & What to Bring

  • The Setti Fatma waterfall hike is a genuine mountain walk: about 45–60 minutes up on rocky, sometimes slippery paths with stream crossings and short scrambles. Trainers or hiking shoes are essential: no sandals or flip-flops
  • Not up for the hike? You can wait at the riverside cafés, wander the village stalls or relax at the Berber house instead. Nobody is rushed and the day works perfectly without it
  • Bring cash in dirhams for lunch, the optional local hiking guide, drinks and market stalls. There are no ATMs or card machines in the valley
  • Mobile signal fades above Setti Fatma and there is no Wi-Fi on the trail; the only reliable toilets are at the trailhead, before the climb
  • The mountain road winds through the foothills, so if you get travel sick, ask to sit near the front and let us know in advance
  • Setti Fatma sits at about 1,500 m (4,900 ft), several degrees cooler than Marrakech: pack a light layer, plus sunscreen and a refillable water bottle
  • On Mondays the weekly Berber souk at Tnin Ourika fills the lower valley; ask us to time your visit around it

Tour FAQs

How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech?

About 60 km (37 miles) south of Marrakech, roughly one hour each way depending on traffic and photo stops. It's the closest taste of the High Atlas to the city, which is why it works so well as a day trip.

Is the Setti Fatma waterfall hike difficult?

Honest answer: it's a proper mountain hike, not a stroll. Expect 45–60 minutes of uphill walking on rocky, sometimes slippery paths with stream crossings and a few short scrambles, about 1.5–2 hours round trip. Trainers or hiking shoes are a must, and we recommend a local guide (a small fee, paid directly) who knows the safest line and literally lends a hand on the tricky sections. If you have knee problems, vertigo or limited mobility, skip it; the riverside cafés and village make a lovely alternative.

Can I do this trip without hiking at all?

Absolutely, many guests do. While others climb, you can relax at a riverside café, explore Setti Fatma's stalls, cross the footbridge for photos, or spend longer at the Berber home. The valley, villages, souk and lunch are the same either way.

What day is the Tnin Ourika market?

Mondays only. Tnin (from tin, Berber for Monday) is one of the biggest weekly souks in the Atlas foothills: livestock, spices, textiles and household goods under canvas. If a Monday works for you, tell us and we'll time the valley drive around it.

Is lunch included? Where do we eat?

Lunch isn't included. The riverside restaurants at Setti Fatma set low tables and cushions right above the stream, serving tagines, brochettes and salads at very fair prices. Bring cash in dirhams (no card machines in the valley), or ask us to reserve a table before you arrive.

What should I wear and bring?

Trainers or hiking shoes (essential if you plan the waterfall trail, since flip-flops won't survive it), a small backpack so your hands are free, sunscreen, sunglasses, a refillable water bottle, cash for lunch/tips/stalls, and a light layer. Setti Fatma is about 1,500 m up and cooler than Marrakech. Tissues are handy: the only toilets are at the trailhead.

Private vs shared group tour: what's the difference?

Shared minibus tours run a fixed 17-seat timetable: the Berber home visit is often dropped when crowds build, stops are limited, and you leave Setti Fatma when the group does. Ours is fully private: your own vehicle and driver, your own pace, the Berber home guaranteed, and photo stops wherever you like along the gorge.

Is there Wi-Fi or phone signal in the valley?

Signal fades above Setti Fatma and there's no Wi-Fi on the trail, so tell anyone who needs you that you'll be offline for a couple of hours. Most riverside cafés have coverage for when you're back down.
