Experience Overview

Morning (07:30 – 11:45): Your driver collects you from your Marrakech hotel or riad at 07:30. Leave the Haouz plains and climb Route N9 into the High Atlas Mountains, pausing at terraced Berber villages and the 2,260 m (7,415 ft) summit of Tizi n'Tichka, the highest major paved pass in North Africa.

Day 1 · Midday

UNESCO Ksar Aït Ben Haddou & Ounila Valley Terrace Lunch

Midday (11:45 – 14:45): Turn onto the quiet Ounila Valley side road to Ksar Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen citadel of the old trans-Saharan caravans and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Cross the shallow riverbed on foot and spend two unhurried hours climbing the rammed-earth lanes to the hilltop granary, followed by lunch on a terrace facing the ksar.

Day 1 · Afternoon & Night 1

Ouarzazate, Skoura & Valley of Roses → Dades Valley Kasbah Stay

Afternoon & Evening (14:45 – 18:00): Drive past Ouarzazate, with an optional photo stop at the carved mud-brick facade of Taourirt Kasbah, then continue east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Skoura palm oasis and Kelaat M'gouna's Valley of Roses. Wind into the Dades Gorge past the 'Monkey Fingers' rock formations.

Where You Will Stay (Night 1): Boutique kasbah hotel in the Dades Valley with private en-suite bathroom, three-course Moroccan dinner, and breakfast included (Day 1 total: 310 km / 193 miles, ~5.5–6 hours driving).

Day 2 · 08:30 AM

Tisdrine Hairpins → Todra Gorge 300 m (984 ft) Canyon Walk

Morning (08:30 – 11:30): After breakfast overlooking the Dades canyon, photograph the carved Tisdrine switchbacks before driving east to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge. Walk the flat, spring-fed riverbed for 45 minutes where vertical rust-red limestone cliffs rise 300 m (984 ft) overhead.

Day 2 · Midday

Erfoud Fossil Workshops & Rissani Caravan Souk

Midday (11:30 – 15:30): Cross the pre-Saharan plateau through Tinjdad and Erfoud, renowned for 350-million-year-old marine ammonite and trilobite fossils. Continue to Rissani, ancestral cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, to walk the shaded market alleys and taste freshly baked Madfouna (Berber stuffed flatbread) for lunch.

Day 2 · Sunset & Night 2

Erg Chebbi Sunset Camel Trek & En-Suite Luxury Desert Camp

Afternoon & Evening (16:00 – Night): Arrive at Merzouga where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to 150 m (492 ft) across a 28 km (17 mile) sand sea. Ride your camel for 60 to 90 minutes across the dune crests as the light turns from gold to amber and violet (or take a private 4x4 transfer directly to camp).

Where You Will Stay (Night 2): Private en-suite luxury tent in Erg Chebbi with king or twin beds, hot-water shower, private flush toilet, multi-course Moroccan dinner, and Amazigh drumming around the campfire under the Milky Way (Day 2 total: 250 km / 155 miles, ~4–4.5 hours driving).

Day 3 · Morning

Sahara Sunrise → Ziz Valley Palm Canyon & Midelt

Morning (06:00 – 13:00): Wake before dawn to watch the sun crest the high dune toward the Algerian border ridge, then return to camp for a hot shower and full Moroccan breakfast. Turn north through the Ziz Valley, where a ribbon of date palms runs between canyon walls, pause at the panoramic overlook, then break for lunch in Midelt beneath the apple-growing slopes of the High Atlas.

Day 3 · Afternoon & Night 3

Azrou Cedar Forest Barbary Macaques & Ifrane → Fes Riad

Afternoon & Evening (13:00 – 18:30): Climb into the Middle Atlas and walk among the ancient cedars of Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques. Pass Ifrane, the tidy alpine-style town Moroccans call Little Switzerland, then descend to the imperial city of Fes.

Where You Will Stay (Night 3): Riad in Fes with private en-suite room and breakfast; the evening is yours for a first taste of the medina or a quiet rooftop dinner (Day 3 total: 470 km / 292 miles, ~7–7.5 hours driving, the longest leg of the route).

Day 4 · Morning

Guided Fes el-Bali: Royal Palace, Borj Sud & the Medina Gates

Day 4 · Afternoon & Night 4

Chouara Tanneries, Artisan Souks & Free Fes Evening

Afternoon & Evening (13:00 – Night): After lunch inside the medina, look down on the honeycomb of stone dye pits at the Chouara tanneries, then follow your guide through the metalwork, leather, ceramic and woodwork souks around the Nejjarine fountain. The evening is free: choose your own restaurant and let the 9,000-odd lanes settle around you.

Where You Will Stay (Night 4): Second night in the same Fes riad, breakfast included (Day 4: no driving, all walking).

Day 5 · Morning

Fes → UNESCO Volubilis Roman Ruins

Morning (08:30 – 12:00): Leave Fes westward across the Saïs plain to Volubilis, the Roman city founded in the 3rd century BC and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walk among the triumphal arch of Caracalla, the basilica columns and floor mosaics that still show labours of Hercules in coloured stone.

Day 5 · Afternoon & Night 5

Rif Mountains → Chefchaouen Blue Medina

Afternoon & Evening (12:00 – 18:00): Turn north into the Rif Mountains past Berber villages and terraced hillsides, with a lunch stop on the way. By late afternoon the blue-washed lanes of Chefchaouen appear beneath the twin peaks that gave the town its name. Check into your medina riad, then take a first free wander through the blue alleys and artisan shops before dinner.

Where You Will Stay (Night 5): Riad inside the Chefchaouen medina with private en-suite room and breakfast (Day 5 total: 255 km / 158 miles, ~4–4.5 hours driving).

Day 6 · Morning

Spanish Mosque Viewpoint, Plaza Uta el-Hammam → Tour Ends in Chefchaouen

Morning (09:00 – 12:00): The last morning is unscripted. Walk about 20 minutes up to the whitewashed Spanish Mosque for the classic panorama of the blue town in morning light, or keep to the medina: coffee and fresh orange juice on Plaza Uta el-Hammam beside the 15th-century kasbah, plus the weaving and leather workshops the town is known for. The tour ends in Chefchaouen around midday. Continuing north? We can arrange onward transfers to Tangier (about 2 hours), Casablanca (about 4.5 hours) or back to Marrakech (about 7 hours) on request.

Important Information & What to Bring

  • Pack a small overnight backpack for your Erg Chebbi luxury camp night; your main suitcases stay locked safely inside your private vehicle for all 6 days
  • Bring a warm fleece or packable jacket for Sahara nights and the 06:00 sunrise climb (winter dawn temperatures drop to 2–8 °C / 36–46 °F)
  • Add a light rain layer for the Rif Mountains: Chefchaouen sits at about 600 m (1,970 ft) and showers are most common from November to April
  • Wear closed walking shoes with grip for the earthen lanes of Ksar Aït Ben Haddou, the Todra Gorge riverbed, the Volubilis ruins and Chefchaouen's stepped alleys
  • Long cotton trousers are most comfortable for the 60-to-90-minute camel trek; a complimentary private 4x4 camp transfer is available for anyone skipping the saddle
  • The tour ends in Chefchaouen on Day 6; tell us your onward plan (Tangier, Casablanca, a return to Marrakech, or extra nights in the Blue City) when requesting your quote

Tour FAQs

Where does the 6-day Marrakech to Chefchaouen tour end, and how do I get back?

The tour ends in Chefchaouen around midday on Day 6. Most travellers continue north to Tangier (about 2 hours), fly home from Casablanca (about 4.5 hours by road), or return to Marrakech (about 7 hours). Tell us your onward plan and we will quote the private transfer with your booking.

Is 6 days enough for the Sahara, Fes and Chefchaouen?

Yes, and it is the only itinerary that links all three without doubling back. You get the full southern loop (Aït Ben Haddou, Todra Gorge, Erg Chebbi camp night), two nights in Fes with a full guided medina day, Volubilis, and a night inside the blue medina, at about 1,290 km (800 miles) total.

How many hours do we drive each day on the 6-day itinerary?

Driving runs about 5.5–6 hours on Day 1 (310 km / 193 miles to Dades), 4–4.5 hours on Day 2 (250 km / 155 miles to Merzouga), 7–7.5 hours on Day 3 (470 km / 292 miles to Fes, the longest leg, broken by the Ziz Valley, Midelt, the Azrou cedars and Ifrane), zero driving on Day 4 in Fes, about 4–4.5 hours on Day 5 (255 km / 158 miles via Volubilis to Chefchaouen), and none on Day 6.

Why desert first and Chefchaouen last, instead of the other way round?

Driving south first puts the longest road days early while your energy is high, then the trip slows down: a guided walking day in Fes needs no vehicle at all, and the tour finishes with a free morning in the calmest town on the route. It also leaves you in the north, handy for Tangier ferries and Casablanca flights.

Do the luxury desert camp tents in Erg Chebbi have private bathrooms and hot showers?

Yes. Every private suite tent in our Erg Chebbi luxury desert camp includes an en-suite bathroom with a hot-water shower, a porcelain flush toilet, a washbasin, fresh towels, 220V/USB charging outlets, and king or twin beds with extra winter blankets.

What is the best time of year for a Marrakech to Chefchaouen desert tour?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) give warm southern days, mild dunes nights and green Rif hillsides. Summer is hot around Merzouga but cooler in Fes and Chefchaouen, while winter brings crisp clear days, 2–8 °C (36–46 °F) camp dawns and occasional rain in the Rif.

Is the 6-day tour suitable for families with children and older travellers?

Yes. Only Day 3 is a long drive, afternoons end before dusk, and there is a full no-driving day in the middle. Kids enjoy the macaques at Azrou and the tannery balconies, and anyone skipping the camel ride can use our complimentary private 4x4 transfer directly into the luxury camp.

How does private quote-on-request pricing work for the 6-day tour?

Your private rate depends on party size (1 to 15 guests), travel season, and your accommodation choices across all 5 nights, including whether you want onward transfers from Chefchaouen included. Send your dates and headcount on WhatsApp (+212 661 666 324) or via the booking form for a fixed, all-inclusive quote in EUR, USD, GBP, or MAD.
