Which Desert Should You Choose? The Short Answer
Forty minutes southwest of Marrakech, the green of the Haouz plain stops and the ground turns to pale, folded stone. On a clear evening the High Atlas glows pink behind the camp, camels cross the ridge, and there is not one sand dune in sight. Travellers planning a first Moroccan desert trip often send the photos and ask the same thing: is this the Sahara?
It is not, and that gap causes the most common mistake in desert planning from Marrakech. Three places share the word "desert" in tour listings: Agafay, Zagora and Merzouga. They sit 40 minutes, 7 hours and 9 hours from the city, and only one has the 150 m (492 ft) dunes from the photographs. This guide compares all three by distance, terrain and days needed, then answers the three questions travellers ask most.
Quick Answer
Agafay vs Merzouga vs Zagora comes down to the days you have. Agafay is a stone desert 30 to 40 km (19 to 25 miles) from Marrakech with no sand dunes. Zagora, about 350 km (217 miles) away, has small dunes and fits a 2-day trip. Merzouga's Erg Chebbi, 560 km (348 miles) away, has the big dunes, up to 150 m (492 ft), and needs at least 3 days. Our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour is the shortest comfortable way to reach them.

Which Desert Near Marrakech Has the Big Sand Dunes From the Photos?
Merzouga's Erg Chebbi is the closest desert with big dunes, and "closest" still means 560 km (348 miles). Nothing near Marrakech comes near it. Agafay has no sand, and Zagora's dunes are small.
The orange ridges in most Sahara photos rise up to 150 m (492 ft) from the stony plain and run about 28 km (17 miles) along the Algerian border, according to Wikipedia's Erg Chebbi entry. Marketing photos of Agafay are often shot at golden hour, when bare rock can pass for dunes. Check whether a photo shows sand underfoot or only distant light.
How to Tell a Dune Photo From a Stone Photo
Before you book a trip sold as "the desert", look at the picture the way a guide would:
- Ripples and ridge lines: wind draws sharp, curving crests and fine ripples in sand. Stone shows broken edges and flat, dull patches.
- Footprints and camel tracks: they leave soft, deep marks in sand and almost none on gravel.
- Scale: in Erg Chebbi a line of camels looks tiny against the slope behind it. On Agafay they walk across open ground.
- The location name: ask the operator which dune field the camp sits in. "Near Marrakech" and "in the Sahara" cannot both be true.

Agafay: A Stone Desert 40 Minutes From Marrakech
Agafay is a hamada, a stony desert plateau, with no sand dunes, and it is the only one of the three you can visit and still sleep in your own riad. It lies 30 to 40 km (19 to 25 miles) southwest of the city on the road toward Amizmiz. Lonely Planet describes it as a rough, dry, moon-like expanse. In winter the High Atlas behind it is often white.
Camps on the plateau sell sunset camel rides, dinners under the stars and one-night stays. The rides are short, usually 30 to 45 minutes, and an evening trip returns to Marrakech by about 10:30 or 11 pm.
An overnight stay adds a sunrise over the plateau and removes the late drive back. It suits a couple with one spare night, though you still sleep on stone, not sand, and the night sky carries some of Marrakech's glow.
- Desert horizon and silence under an hour from the city
- Sunset and stars without a long drive
- A good fit for young children and older travellers
- An easy add-on at either end of a longer trip
The honest limit: no dunes, no sandboarding, and weekend evenings are busier because camps sit close together. Choose Agafay for atmosphere, not for sand.
Zagora: Palm Valley and Small Dunes, 7 Hours Away
Zagora suits a 2-day trip, but its dunes are small, so set expectations before you book. The town sits at the southern end of the Draa Valley, about 350 km (217 miles) from Marrakech. Operator sources give 6 to 7 hours without long stops and 7 to 8 hours with them. The road crosses the High Atlas at Tizi n'Tichka (2,260 m / 7,415 ft), passes Ouarzazate and follows the Draa palm groves south.

The dunes near Zagora, such as Tinfou, are scattered sand ridges rather than a dune sea. We put them at roughly 5 to 10 m (16 to 33 ft). Other guides quote anything from a few metres to a few tens of metres for the dunes around Zagora and M'Hamid, because the sand is scattered and moves.
The big sand sea in this region is Erg Chigaga. It lies beyond M'Hamid, about 98 km (61 miles) past Zagora, and the last stretch is a 4x4 track of about 2 hours. That is a trip of at least 3 days, not a 2-day add-on.
The honest limit: a lot of driving for one night in the sand. If you can add a day, Merzouga repays the road far better.
Merzouga: Erg Chebbi's 150 m Dunes, 9 Hours Away
Merzouga is the only one of the three with the big dunes, and it needs three days from Marrakech, not two. The village sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, a dune sea about 28 km (17 miles) long and 5 to 7 km (3 to 4 miles) wide, and the Moroccan National Tourist Office features it first among the country's southern desert destinations. The drive is about 560 km (348 miles), 8.5 to 9 hours non-stop on our timings.
Our 3-day route splits the road into three legs:
- Day 1, 310 km (193 miles): leave at 07:30, cross Tizi n'Tichka before coach traffic, walk UNESCO-listed Ksar Aït Ben Haddou, sleep in the Dades Valley
- Day 2, 250 km (155 miles): Todra Gorge, then a 60 to 90 minute camel ride into the dunes at sunset and a night in an en-suite luxury camp
- Day 3, 560 km (348 miles): dune sunrise, then the Southern Loop back through N'Kob and the Draa Valley, with drop-off at your Marrakech hotel between 18:30 and 19:30

Once you are there, the dunes are the least of it. You can sandboard at sunrise, hear Gnawa musicians in the village of Khamlia, browse the Rissani market on the old caravan site, or watch flamingos at Dayet Srji lake when it holds water. Camp nights run from basic tents to en-suite suites, so ask exactly what your tent includes.

More days mean less rushing. Our 4-day tour adds a morning 4x4 excursion around the dunes, and the 5-day tour covers about 1,210 km (752 miles) with two nights around Merzouga and a full day in the Sahara.
Can You Visit a Sand Desert on a 2-Day Tour From Marrakech?
Yes, a 2-day tour reaches sand at Zagora, but a 2-day tour to Merzouga's big dunes means about 17 to 18 hours of non-stop driving. The table below shows what each trip costs in road time, using our own route timings and operator figures for Zagora.
| Trip | Round-trip distance | Driving time | Nights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agafay evening | 60-80 km (37-50 miles) | 1.3-2 hours | 0 or 1 |
| Zagora, 2 days | About 700 km (435 miles) | 12-14 hours | 1 |
| Merzouga, 2 days | About 1,120 km (696 miles) | 17-18 hours | 1 |
| Merzouga, our 3-day loop | 1,120 km (696 miles) | 17.5-19 hours | 2 |
With exactly two days, you have three honest options:
1. Zagora for 2 days and 1 night. You reach sand, a camel ride and a camp, with small dunes. 2. Agafay plus a day trip. A desert evening plus our Ouarzazate day trip covers the film studios and kasbahs without a night on the road. 3. Add a day. The 3-day loop gives you the big dunes and a night in them.
The common mistake: booking a "2-day Merzouga tour" because the price looks low, then spending most of both days in the vehicle. A private vehicle helps, because you leave when you choose and stop where you like.
Can You Combine an Agafay Day Trip With a Deep Sahara Tour?
Yes, and the order is Sahara first, Agafay last. Do the long trip while you have the energy, then keep an easy evening in Agafay for the end of your stay. It is 40 minutes from the city, so there is no risk of missing a flight.
The two cannot share a day. Our 3-day circuit returns to Marrakech between 18:30 and 19:30, while sunset dinner pick-ups usually start between 15:30 and 17:00. Leave one evening in between.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 to 3 | Marrakech to Merzouga circuit with a night in the dunes |
| Day 4 | Rest morning in Marrakech, Agafay sunset dinner in the evening |
| Day 5 | Flight or onward transfer |
Ask us on WhatsApp to plan the Agafay evening around your dates and flight times.
Which Desert Suits You?
| Your situation | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One free evening | Agafay | 40 minutes away, back by about 11 pm |
| Exactly 2 days | Zagora | Reaches sand, with small dunes |
| 3 days | Merzouga, 3-day loop | First night in the big dunes |
| 4 to 5 days | Merzouga, 4 or 5 days | A full Sahara day and a slower return |
| Ending in Fes | Merzouga one-way | Day 3 drop-off in Fes, 470 km (292 miles), about 7.5 hours |
| Quiet, remote dunes | Erg Chigaga | 3 or more days and a 4x4 track |
Our recommendation: if the dunes are the reason you are going, give Merzouga three days and put Agafay at the end. If they are not, Agafay alone is a good evening and costs a fraction of the road time.
Know Before You Go
Desert nights are cold outside summer, and summer days are hot. These are the temperatures on our Merzouga route:
| Season | Day | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (March-May) | 24-32 °C (75-90 °F) | 12-18 °C (54-64 °F) |
| Summer (June-August) | 38-44 °C (100-111 °F) | 24-28 °C (75-82 °F) |
| Autumn (September-November) | 25-33 °C (77-91 °F) | 13-19 °C (55-66 °F) |
| Winter (December-February) | 16-22 °C (61-72 °F) | 2-8 °C (36-46 °F) |
- Luggage: on the Merzouga trip, large suitcases stay locked in your private vehicle and you carry a small backpack to your tent.
- Winding roads: tell your driver before departure if anyone is sensitive to them, and they can reserve the front seat and add summit stops.
- Mobile coverage: it is patchy or absent in the dunes, so bring a power bank.
- More detail: our practical tips for the 3-day desert trip cover packing and families.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Agafay desert the Sahara?
No. Agafay is a stony plateau with no sand dunes, about 40 minutes from Marrakech. The Sahara's big dunes are at Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. Agafay gives you a desert evening, and Merzouga gives you the dunes.
How far is Zagora from Marrakech?
About 350 km (217 miles), or 6 to 8 hours depending on stops. The road crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass and follows the Draa Valley south. Most operators run it as a 2-day trip with one night in a camp.
Is Zagora or Merzouga better?
Merzouga has the larger dunes and Zagora has the shorter drive. Choose Merzouga if you have three days and want the dunes from the photos, and choose Zagora if you have exactly two. Our Merzouga or Zagora comparison goes into more detail.
How long does it take to drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?
It is about 560 km (348 miles), which takes 8.5 to 9 hours non-stop and around 10 hours with normal stops. Doing it in 2 days leaves little time in the dunes, so most travellers split it. On our 3-day route, Day 1 is 5.5 to 6 hours to the Dades Valley and Day 2 is 4 to 4.5 hours to the dunes. Our 5-day tour adds free time between the drives.
When is the best month to visit the Sahara Desert in Morocco?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are best, with warm days and comfortably cool nights. Winter has clear skies but cold nights, down to 2 to 8 °C (36 to 46 °F). Avoid summer if you can: days reach 38 to 44 °C (100 to 111 °F) on our route, and camel rides move to late afternoon.
What is the difference between a standard and a luxury desert camp?
Standard camps usually offer traditional nomad tents with shared bathroom facilities. A luxury camp gives you a private canvas suite with an en-suite bathroom and hot water. Our Erg Chebbi luxury camp has king or twin beds, a hot shower, a flush toilet, power and USB outlets, and a multi-course dinner with Amazigh drumming around the campfire.
Do I need a 4x4 to reach the dunes at Merzouga?
No. A paved road runs to the edge of the dunes. From there you ride a camel for 60 to 90 minutes, or take a private 4x4 transfer of about 20 minutes. Erg Chigaga is different, because its last stretch is an unpaved track that needs a 4x4.
Is the Merzouga trip suitable for children?
Yes, with planning. The longest driving days are 8 to 8.5 hours on the return, so ask for extra stops and a shorter camel ride. A private vehicle lets you set the pace.

Agafay vs Merzouga — which desert is better from Marrakech?

Can you see sand dunes in Agafay?
No — Agafay is a stone/hamada desert with rocky hills, not sand dunes. For dunes you need Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) or Zagora/M'hamid further south.
How far is Agafay desert from Marrakech?
Roughly 40–45 minutes (30 km) — close enough for sunset dinners, quad biking and overnight camps without a big journey.
