4-Day Marrakech to Erg Chegaga Desert Tour
The wild Sahara beyond M'Hamid - remote dunes, nomad camps and total silence, on the route most tours never reach.

Experience Overview
A 4-day private Marrakech to Erg Chegaga desert tour for travelers who want the Sahara without the crowds. Erg Chegaga - not Merzouga - is Morocco's wildest dune field: ~300 m ridges, camps that cannot see each other, and an arrival by 60 km of off-road piste that keeps the tour buses out.
Quick answer: the route at a glance
- Day 1: Marrakech - Tizi n'Tichka - Ksar Ait Ben Haddou - Ounila - Zagora
- Day 2: Tamegroute pottery & library - M'Hamid - off-road to Erg Chegaga - sunset camel trek, camp
- Day 3: Full Chegaga day - nomad visit, sunrise ridge, second golden hour
- Day 4: Foum Zguid or Draa return - Marrakech by early evening
Why Chegaga, not Merzouga?
Merzouga's Erg Chebbi is beautiful but organized - dozens of camps line the dune edge. Erg Chegaga is different: you reach it by 4x4 across the dry Lake Iriki bed, and your camp may be the only light in the basin at night. If you have 4 days and want the remote Sahara, this is the tour. If you have 3 days, do the Merzouga 3-day instead.
Practical notes
- Vehicle: private 4x4 (Land Cruiser Prado or equivalent) for 1-4 guests; private minivan for 5+.
- Luggage: stays in your locked vehicle; carry a small overnight bag to camp.
- When to go: October-April is ideal. Summer (June-August) is very hot - we recommend the Merzouga circuit then.

Detailed Itinerary
Step-by-step timeline of your private journey.
Crossing the High Atlas to Ait Ben Haddou
Morning: Leave Marrakech at 7:30 and climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) with photo stops above the Berber villages. Afternoon: A short walk inside Ksar Ait Ben Haddou - the UNESCO fortified ksar - then continue down the Ounila Valley toward Telouet Kasbah and Agdz, where the road meets the Draa Valley palms. Overnight in the Zagora area.
Zagora, Tamegroute & the road to M'Hamid
Morning: Follow the Draa Valley south through Zagora and stop in Tamegroute - the green-glazed pottery village with a medieval Qoranic library. Afternoon: Reach M'Hamid el Ghizlane, the last oasis village before the desert turns wild. Here the tarmac ends: the 4x4 takes the piste across the former Lake Iriki bed to the dunes of Erg Chegaga. Camel trek at sunset, dinner and nomad music at your private camp.
Full desert day at Erg Chegaga
Dawn: Sunrise on the big dunes - Chegaga's highest ridge rises ~300 m. Late morning: Visit a nomad family for tea on the plains behind the dunes; optional sandboarding or a longer camel ride. Afternoon: Second golden-hour trek or a quiet afternoon at camp - this is the day the desert is the destination. Second night at camp with dinner and drumming under the Milky Way.
The return: Foum Zguid or Draa route home
Morning: Leave camp after breakfast - the 4x4 exits either via Foum Zguid (the wilder track) or back through M'Hamid. Afternoon: Recross the Draa and the High Atlas with stops on the way, arriving in Marrakech by early evening. Drop-off at your riad.
Pickup & Meeting Point
Your hotel or riad in Marrakech
Pickup included from any central Marrakech accommodation at 7:00-8:00. Off-road 4x4 section after M'Hamid - luggage travels on the vehicle.
Important Information & What to Bring
- Erg Chegaga is reached by roughly 60 km of rough piste - expect a bumpy off-road section, not a highway.
- Best months: October to April. June-August is extremely hot; we recommend the Merzouga alternative then.
- Desert camp has private tents with beds and shared or private bathrooms depending on tier - no hotel-style facilities this remote.
- Modest dress recommended in villages; bring sunscreen, a hat and warm layers for cold desert nights.
Tour FAQs
Is Erg Chegaga better than Merzouga?
It is wilder, not 'better' - Erg Chegaga has higher dunes (~300 m), almost no camps within sight of each other, and a true off-road arrival. Merzouga is easier to reach. If you want the remote Sahara, Chegaga is the answer.
How rough is the off-road section to Chegaga?
About 60 km of piste after M'Hamid, roughly 90 minutes in a 4x4. It is bumpy but safe - that off-road section is exactly what keeps the crowds away.
Can children or seniors do this tour?
Yes - we drive rather than trek, and the camel ride can be shortened or skipped with a 4x4 transfer into camp instead.
How does private quote-on-request pricing work?
Every tour is 100% private, so the rate depends on party size, dates and camp tier. Send dates + headcount via WhatsApp (+212 661 666 324) for a fixed all-inclusive quote in EUR, USD, GBP or MAD.
