5-Day Agadir to Erg Chegaga Desert & Heritage Tour
The south nobody shows you - Taroudant's walls, saffron country, carpet-weaving Taznakht, then the wild dunes of Chegaga.

Experience Overview
A 5-day Agadir to Erg Chegaga tour that trades the tourist trail for the real south. While every other operator runs the Marrakech-Merzouga highway, this route goes through the Amazigh heartland - Taroudant's intact ramparts, the saffron fields of Taliouine, the carpet-weaving town of Taznakht - and ends in the wild dunes of Chegaga, Morocco's biggest erg.
Quick answer: the route at a glance
- Day 1: Agadir - Souss plain - Taroudant walled city
- Day 2: Taliouine saffron - Taznakht carpets - Foum Zguid
- Day 3: Off-road across Lake Iriki - Erg Chegaga - sunset camel trek, camp
- Day 4: M'Hamid - Tamegroute - Draa Valley - Ouarzazate
- Day 5: Ksar Ait Ben Haddou - Tizi n'Tichka - Marrakech
Who is this tour for?
Travelers who have already done the classic desert tour, or who land in Agadir and want a genuine heritage route to the desert. The south-west approach through saffron and carpet country is something the standard circuits completely miss - and it pairs perfectly with the raw Chegaga dunes, which are wilder than anything in the Merzouga circuit.

Detailed Itinerary
Step-by-step timeline of your private journey.
Agadir to Taroudant - the walled city
Morning: Leave Agadir and cross the Souss plain of orange groves to Taroudant - the walled market city older than Marrakech. Afternoon: Walk the medina under the ramparts, the leather and silver souks, and the Assarag square - our city-tour philosophy applied to the small city most travelers skip. Overnight in a Taroudant riad.
Taliouine saffron & Taznakht carpets to Foum Zguid
Morning: Climb into the Anti-Atlas to Taliouine - the saffron capital - for a cooperative visit (saffron is picked by hand, ~150 flowers per gram). Afternoon: Continue through Taznakht, famous for its red Berber carpets, then south to the desert gateway of Foum Zguid. Overnight near Foum Zguid.
Off-road to the dunes of Erg Chegaga
Morning: Leave the tarmac for the old piste across the dry bed of Lake Iriki - 90 minutes of true off-road. Afternoon: Arrive at the dunes of Erg Chegaga, the biggest and least-visited erg in Morocco. Camel trek at sunset, dinner and nomad drums at your private camp.
M'Hamid, Tamegroute & the Draa Valley
Morning: Return to civilization at M'Hamid el Ghizlane, the end-of-the-road oasis. Visit Tamegroute's green pottery workshops and its centuries-old Qoranic library. Afternoon: Follow the Draa Valley north through Zagora and Agdz to Ouarzazate. Overnight in a riad.
Ait Ben Haddou & the Atlas home to Marrakech
Morning: Explore Ksar Ait Ben Haddou before the crowds - the UNESCO mud-brick citadel. Afternoon: Cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass and descend to Marrakech for an early-evening drop-off.

Tour FAQs
Why does this tour start in Agadir and not Marrakech?
It is designed for travelers already on the coast or flying into Agadir airport - and it lets you see the southern heritage towns (Taroudant, Taliouine, Taznakht) that Marrakech-departing tours never reach. The tour ends in Marrakech.
Is Taroudant worth visiting?
Yes - it is a working walled market city, often called 'little Marrakech,' with intact ramparts and far fewer tourists. It is one of the most honest city experiences in the south.
How rough is the off-road to Chegaga?
About 90 minutes of 4x4 piste from Foum Zguid across the dry Lake Iriki. Bumpy but safe - and it is why Chegaga stays wild.
