Ouzoud Waterfalls Day Trip from Marrakech: Morocco's Tallest Falls & Barbary Macaques
Private Middle Atlas Escape - 110m Triple-Tier Falls - Boat Ride to the Cascade Base - Wild Barbary Macaques - Terrace Lunch Overlooking the Falls - Rainbow Mist

Experience Overview
A private day at Morocco's tallest waterfalls: the 110-meter Ouzoud cascades in the Middle Atlas foothills. Honest note upfront: the drive is 2.5-3 hours each way, so this is a full day and best for itineraries of four days or more. If you're short on time, Ourika or Imlil are closer mountain escapes.
Once you're there, though, it's spectacular. The stepped path down through olive groves takes about 30 minutes with stops, past wild Barbary macaques and cliff-top viewpoints. At the base, a small rowboat crosses to within spraying distance of the main cascade - a few dirhams, and the best photos of the day. Lunch is on a terrace overlooking the falls, then the afternoon is yours: macaques, pools, the cliff-top loop or a cafe. Private means you leave when you're ready, not when a bus does.
Planning a longer Morocco route? Ouzoud pairs naturally with the northern circuits - see the 9-day grand tour or our guide to Morocco's largest cities for how it fits a broader itinerary.

Detailed Itinerary
Step-by-step timeline of your private journey.
Marrakech - the Tadla Plains
Your driver collects you at your hotel or the nearest medina access point. The city gives way to the flat agricultural Tadla plains: olive groves, orchards and farming villages, with the Middle Atlas foothills rising ahead. Coffee and photo stops whenever you want them.
Arrival at Ouzoud & the First Viewpoint
You hear the falls before you see them. The first stop is the cliff-top panorama: all three tiers of the 110-meter cascade dropping into the El Abid gorge, olive groves on the rim and Barbary macaques often lounging in the branches above the path.
The Descent: Olive Groves & the River
A guided walk down the stepped path through the olive groves, about 300 steps with stops at the best angles on the falls. Wild macaques shadow the path. At the bottom, the river winds through red-rock pools before the main gorge.
The Boat Ride to the Falls' Base
The small rowboat crossing to the base of the main cascade: a few dirhams, a few minutes, and you are close enough to feel the spray. On a sunny day the mist throws a permanent rainbow across the gorge. Optional but the single best moment of the day.
Terrace Lunch Above the Falls
Lunch on a terrace overlooking the cascade: tagines, brochettes and mint tea with the water as the backdrop. Not included, so you pick the terrace and the pace, or ask us to reserve a good table ahead.
Free Time: Macaques, Pools or the Cliff-Top Loop
Your afternoon: watch the macaques in the olive groves, dip your feet in the natural pools below the falls, take the cliff-top loop for the wide-angle views, or simply sit at a cafe with the sound of the water. Leave when you're done, not when a bus schedule says so.
Ouzoud - Marrakech
The drive home through the plains in the soft afternoon light. Drop-off at your hotel or the nearest medina access point in the early evening, around 18:00-18:30.
Pickup & Meeting Point
Complimentary pickup at your Marrakech hotel, or the nearest vehicle-accessible point to your medina riad, at 08:30 AM.
Roughly 150 km (93 mi) northeast of Marrakech, about 2.5-3 hours each way through the Tadla plains. Being private means coffee stops, photo stops and timing are yours to set.
Important Information & What to Bring
- The walk down to the falls' base is around 300 steps plus short rocky sections. Trainers or walking shoes are essential: the path can be wet and slippery near the water
- The site is not wheelchair or stroller friendly. Guests who prefer not to descend can enjoy the panoramic viewpoints and terraces at the top
- The small boat ride to the base of the falls is optional and paid locally in cash (a few dirhams). Expect to get lightly sprayed; bring a light layer
- The Barbary macaques are wild animals, not performers. Please don't feed them; feeding is why they've become pushy around the main path
- Bring cash in dirhams for the boat, lunch and small stalls. There are no reliable ATMs at the falls
- Ouzoud is a full day: the drive is 2.5-3 hours each way. If your itinerary is tight, Ourika or Imlil are closer mountain escapes
- Summer weekends are very busy with Moroccan families. For a calmer visit we recommend a weekday departure, which we can arrange on request
Tour FAQs
Are the Ouzoud waterfalls worth it?
Honestly: yes, if you have a day to spare and want Morocco's most spectacular natural sight. At 110 meters over three tiers, nothing else near Marrakech compares. The catch is the drive: 2.5-3 hours each way means it's a full day, so on a 3-day Marrakech stay we'd suggest Ourika or Imlil instead. On a 4+ day trip, Ouzoud earns its place.
How long is the drive from Marrakech to Ouzoud?
About 150 km (93 mi), roughly 2.5-3 hours each way through the Tadla plains. On a private trip we leave at 08:30, arrive around 11:00, and you're back in Marrakech by early evening. Shared-group buses often do the same route with hotel pickups adding an hour.
Can you swim at Ouzoud waterfalls?
Yes, in the natural pools below the falls and along the river, though the water is cold year-round and locals swim more than visitors do. Most guests prefer the boat ride and a dip of the feet. In high season the pools near the main path get crowded; the quieter pools are downstream.
Is there an entrance fee for Ouzoud?
No, the site itself is free. You pay only for extras: the small boat to the falls' base (a few dirhams), lunch, and small stalls. Local 'guides' offer their services at the top but the stepped path is obvious; on our trips your driver walks the route with you anyway.
When is the best time to visit Ouzoud waterfalls?
Spring (March-May) for the strongest water flow after the rains, autumn for warm light and thinner crowds. Summer weekends are packed with Moroccan families, so we recommend weekday visits June-August. Winter is quiet and the falls still run, but it's cold on the descent.
