Morocco's Largest Cities: The Honest Ranking
Morocco's eight largest cities, by population, are: Casablanca (~3.4M), Fes (~1.2M), Marrakech (~1M), Tangier (~1M), Rabat (~0.6M), Meknes (~0.6M), Agadir (~0.5M) and Oujda (~0.5M).
But the honest version isn't a population table — it's which cities actually deserve your limited days. Morocco's biggest cities are not its best ones for tourism, and that surprises people. Here's the real hierarchy for a traveler:
The cities that deserve your time
- Marrakech — the tourist heart; every Morocco trip either starts here or wishes it had
- Fes — the most authentic medina in the Arab world; the intellectual capital
- Casablanca — worth a day for the Hassan II Mosque alone
- Tangier — the renovated port-city comeback story
The ones you can skip
- Rabat — a half-day stopover on the northern route, not a destination
- Meknes — beautiful but small; do it as a stop on the way to Fes
- Agadir — a beach resort, not Morocco; fine if you want a resort, skip if you want the country
- Oujda — far east, little for tourists
1. Casablanca — The White City (Population ~3.4M)
Casablanca is Morocco's economic engine, not its postcard — but it holds the country's single greatest monument.
The Hassan II Mosque is the only mosque in Morocco open to non-Muslims, and it is genuinely one of the great buildings of the world: 210m minaret, glass floor over the Atlantic, hand-carved cedar and zellige interiors. That alone justifies the trip.
Beyond the mosque: the art-deco downtown (Mohammed V square), the Habous quarter, the Corniche seafront, and the best dining and nightlife in the country. The honest take is Casa is one day of sights plus the best food city — not a multi-day stay.
Our Casablanca day trip from Marrakech covers it honestly, and both our 9-day and 11-day grand tours start here.
2. Fes — The Intellectual Capital (~1.2M)
Fes el-Bali is the oldest living medieval city on earth — and it is the single most rewarding medina in Morocco.
The Chouara tanneries, the Bou Inania and Attarine madrasas, the souk labyrinth of ~9,000 alleys — Fes is what Marrakech's medina would be if it had never met a tourist. The honest warning: Fes is intense, and you will get lost; a licensed guide is worth it for the full day.
Fes is the anchor of every northern loop — our 6-day Chefchaouen circuit and both grand tours pass through it.
3. Marrakech — The Red City (~1M)
Marrakech is where Morocco is actually experienced — the medina, the square, the gateway to everything south.
Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk is one of the great human spectacles. The Marrakech city tour — Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, the souks, Koutoubia — is a full day done right. But the honest truth: Marrakech is also the launchpad. The Atlas, the desert, the coast are all within reach — it's where our day trips (Essaouira, Ouarzazate, Imlil, Ourika, Agafay) all depart from.
Come for the medina, stay for what it unlocks.
4. Tangier — The Northern Gateway (~1M)
Tangier is Morocco's comeback story — a cleaned-up Mediterranean port city that's worth a day on the northern route.
The renovated kasbah, the new Corniche, the Cape Spartel lighthouse and the caves of Hercules — Tangier is a pleasant city, not a spectacular one. Its real value is as a gateway: the ferry from Spain lands here, and it's the natural northern anchor of a Morocco itinerary.
Honestly: if you fly into Tangier, spend a day, then head south through Chefchaouen to Fes.
5. Rabat — The Capital (~0.6M)
Rabat is the most underrated stop on the northern route — a clean, calm capital that's the perfect half-day.
The Kasbah of the Udayas (blue-and-white alleys over the ocean), the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V are the honest highlights. Rabat is never a destination on its own — it's a stop between Casablanca and the north, and it fills that role perfectly. Both grand tours include it as the Day 1 stop.
6–8. Meknes, Agadir & Oujda — The Rest of the Top Eight
Meknes (~0.6M) — the smallest imperial city
Beautiful Bab Mansour gate, the royal granaries, and the least-touristed medina of the imperial four. Meknes is honest: it's a half-day stop between Volubilis and Fes, not a base. Both grand tours do it as a stop.
Agadir (~0.5M) — the beach resort
Agadir is Morocco's mass-tourism resort: a long beach, hotels, little medina. If you want a beach holiday it's fine; if you want Morocco it isn't. But — it's the start of our 5-day Agadir to Erg Chegaga heritage route, the one that goes through the real south.
Oujda (~0.5M) — the far east
Oujda sits on the Algerian border and has little for tourists; it makes the list on population only. Skip it.
How to Fit the Cities into a Real Itinerary
The practical question isn't which cities are biggest — it's which ones a real trip can hold.
- 4–5 days: Marrakech + the south (Atlas/desert); maybe one day-trip city
- 6–7 days: Marrakech + south + Essaouira or one northern city
- 9–11 days: the full imperial-cities line — Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, desert, Marrakech
The 9-day grand tour covers all the cities that matter without backtracking; the 11-day adds the coast and an extra Chefchaouen night.
